What is ReadNihongo?

ReadNihongo is a practice tool for reading authentic Japanese stories, graded from beginner to intermediate. It includes reader modes, furigana controls, and vocabulary support so you can grow confidence step by step. See theHow it works page for a quick tour.

Is there offline access?

Yes. Stories you open are cached so you can keep reading without a connection.

  • Open a story once while online to cache it.
  • On mobile, install as a PWA for the best offline experience.
  • If storage is low, older items might be evicted by your browser. Re-open a story to refresh the cache.

Tip: Add the site to your Home Screen (Android Chrome: Menu → Add to Home screen; iOS Safari: Share → Add to Home Screen).

How do I show or hide furigana or switch to vertical text?

Go to Settings → Reader Modes. You can always show furigana, toggle it per word, hide it entirely, or enable vertical text for a book-like layout.

These preferences are remembered per device and synced if you sign in.

Does it support dark mode?

Yes. The interface follows your system preference automatically. You can also override it in Settings. Most modern browsers on desktop and mobile are supported.

Is a web version or PWA available?

Yes. The web app works great on mobile and can be installed as a Progressive Web App (PWA) from your browser menu. Once installed, it appears on your Home Screen and supports offline reading.
