ReadNihongo Community Guidelines
A safe, supportive space for everyone learning to read Japanese.
ReadNihongo exists to make Japanese literacy accessible to all. These guidelines establish the shared expectations that keep our community welcoming, informative, and fun. We actively moderate posts and may restrict or remove accounts that violate these rules.
1. Be Respectful
We come together from diverse cultures, age groups, and proficiency levels, united by a love of Japanese. Treat fellow learners, native speakers, and staff with courtesy. Criticism is fine—disrespect is not. Assume good intent, speak kindly, and remember there is always more to learn.
2. Support All Skill Levels
Japanese is challenging; every kanji you master is a victory. Encourage beginners, celebrate intermediate breakthroughs, and exchange insights at advanced levels. If someone mis-uses a particle or misreads furigana, offer guidance—not ridicule. If you can’t help constructively, scroll on.
3. Celebrate Dialects and Variety
From Kansai-ben punchlines to Okinawan expressions, Japanese has rich regional color. Share dialectal differences, historical kana, or manga slang, and keep an open mind when others do the same. Label region-specific phrases so learners know where and when they’re used.
4. Think Before You Share
Protect your privacy and that of others. Never post phone numbers, precise addresses, school/work schedules, or any personal data that could be misused. We remove content that pressures learners to share private information.
5. Forbidden Conduct
Do not use ReadNihongo to:
Harassment or Hate: Slurs, targeted insults, sexual advances, symbols promoting extremist ideology
Illicit Behavior: Sharing pirated textbooks, facilitating plagiarism, advice on hacking the app
Explicit or Graphic Content: Pornographic imagery, shock content
Spam & Self-Promotion: Unsolicited ads, link farms, repetitive keyword stuffing
Misinformation & Impersonation: Pretending to be a certified teacher when you’re not, posting AI-generated “translations” as human work
6. Honest Learning Only
Automated scripts, answer harvesting, or other cheating tools ruin the experience for everyone. Accounts proven to manipulate streaks, XP, or test scores will be suspended.
7. Keep Discussions On-Topic
Posts should relate to Japanese language, literature, culture, or the ReadNihongo platform. “Off-topic” or inflammatory threads—political rants, excessive profanity, or meme spam—may be removed.
8. Enforcement & Appeals
Moderators may edit or delete content, mute chats, or permanently disable accounts at their discretion. If you believe an action was taken in error, contact appeals@readnihongo.com with your username, the date of the action, and a brief explanation.
